The Briefing

16 October 2026

Apple announced Home Collection on Tuesday — cameras, thermostats, a doorbell and a deadbolt co-developed with LG and Schneider Electric, alongside the HomeView wall hub, now taking pre-orders. On the local stack, the Supervisor stable pin finally moved to 2026.10.2; Core, HAOS, ESPHome, Z-Wave JS UI and Z2M are all unchanged.

Apple Home Collection: Apple designs smart-home hardware with LG and Schneider Electric

Apple Home Collection lineup: LG Smart Deadbolt Lock, LG Indoor Cam, LG Video Doorbell, and Schneider Electric Smart Thermostat
Apple Home Collection lineup — source Apple Newsroom press release, 13 Oct 2026

What happened: Apple announced a lineup of smart-home accessories — LG indoor and outdoor cameras, a video doorbell, an LG Smart Deadbolt Lock, and LG and Schneider Electric smart thermostats with room temperature sensors — designed in collaboration with those two companies rather than merely certified. Setup is one tap on iPhone, everything runs through the Home app with no separate app or account, and Apple says Home app data is encrypted end-to-end so neither LG, Schneider nor Apple can read it. US prices: both thermostats start at $199.95, temperature sensors at $39.95; the C-wire adapters and trim plates are sold separately. Availability starts December, with select accessories in early 2027.

Why it matters: "Works with Apple Home" certification just became the floor, not the ceiling. Apple now designs the product. Apple's own press release stays noticeably quiet on protocol names — coverage (HomeKit News, EDN) reports Thread across the range, Matter support on the lock and thermostats, and Aliro support on the deadbolt, but those specifics come from the press event, not the release text. For households that lean Apple, this is the first first-party-branded accessory line; for Matter watchers it's Apple hedging: local-first, Home-app-centric, Matter as plumbing.

02 · Matter & Thread / Apple

Apple HomeView: a wall-mounted Home hub, pre-orders open, ships 13 November

What happened: Alongside the Collection, Apple introduced HomeView, a wall-mounted smart-home display. Pre-orders opened Tuesday and availability begins 13 November. Power Mount USB-C Wall Connector is $59.95, AC Wired $79.95 (both orderable now), and a PoE version arrives early 2027 at $129.95. It works with the new Collection and other Works with Apple Home and Matter accessories. EDN, reporting from the event, says Apple confirmed on-site that HomeView can act as a Matter controller and bridge and a Thread border router — the press release itself never says so.

Why it matters: Apple's Thread border-router roster (HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K) gains a dedicated wall panel. Nothing here runs Home Assistant, but a second mass-market Thread border router is good news for Thread mesh density generally.

03 · Home Assistant / Supervisor

Stable pin moves: Supervisor 2026.10.2 now on the stable channel

What happened: The thing Tuesday's brief was waiting on: version.home-assistant.io/stable.json now advertises supervisor 2026.10.2 — the pin has moved from 2026.09.3 to the 2026.10 line, two days after the tag. Updates from the stable channel will pull it going forward. Reminder of the one breaking change in that release: ingress sessions must enforce the panel_admin role.

Why it matters: New installs and stable-channel updates now see the 2026.10 Supervisor. Add-on authors relying on lax ingress role checks should test.

04 · Home Assistant

Core still 2026.10.1

What happened: No 2026.10.2. The latest stable tag remains 2026.10.1 (10 Oct) and it's still the default in stable.json.

06 · ESPHome

ESPHome: stable still 2026.9.0; beta 4 is the newest tag

What happened: No change since Thursday. The stable remains 2026.9.0 (16 Sep); the newest tag is beta 2026.10.0b4 (13 Oct). Two breaking changes remain banked for 2026.10.0 and later: select options and light effects move to build-time flash tables (5 Oct dev-blog note), and remote_base protocol methods are no longer virtual (14 Oct, J. Nick Koston).

Why it matters: External components touching those APIs will need edits before the .0 drops. The beta cadence has paused at four, which no longer looks imminent.

09 · Matter & Thread / Google

Google Home is migrating existing Hue bridges to local Matter control

What happened: Google's October 14 Home release notes, as summarized by matterhome.io, say existing Philips Hue bridges in Google Home are being upgraded in the background to local Matter control through Google hubs — no re-pairing. Google gives no regions, no timing, and no way to check progress, and it requires a Google hub on the same network as the bridge.

Why it matters: Bridges quietly switching transport under users' feet is exactly the kind of change that surfaces as "my Hue lights stopped responding" posts. We could only verify this through a secondary source this morning; treat it as reported, not confirmed in the release notes directly.

Hue Play Gradient Strip Pro: Hue US page still out of stock

What happened: We checked Hue's own US product page for the pro 65" this morning: still showing out of stock. So the stock picture stands as third-party confirmed only — Amazon listings at $179.99, UK page in stock at £139.99 since late September.

11 · Devices / Shelly

Shelly: Schneider deal still in clearance; ThreadLink still ~December

What happened: No regulatory decision on Schneider's €70/share tender for Shelly Group since the board backed it Tuesday. Gen4 ThreadLink firmware unchanged — still the IFA framing of roughly December, delivered as an opt-in per-device update.

IKEA TIMMERFLOTTE — no news

What happened: No new development since Tuesday: prod-firmware 61 offline drops remain community-sourced, not vendor-confirmed. No change in the Matter test firmware line this morning.
