The Briefing

15 August 2026

Sample weekday brief. Five to six scored items: what happened, why it matters, primary source. Not autonomously published.

01 · ESPHome

ESPHome Starter Kit

What happened
ESPHome published its first official product on 12 Aug 2026: a starter kit designed and produced with Apollo Automation, teased in April at State of the Open Home.
Why it matters
The firmware project now has first-party hardware. Local-first modules on an ESP32-C6, majority of profit to the Open Home Foundation.

02 · Home Assistant

2026.8 Approachable by design

What happened
Home Assistant 2026.8 shipped 5 Aug. New OS installs drop :8123. Entity IDs, device registry splits, Z-Wave lock credentials, and UI wording also move.
Why it matters
Onboarding changes in the monthly, not in a side-channel blog. Existing installs keep their port.

04 · Home Assistant / Matter

Home Assistant Core 2026.8.2

What happened
Patch 2026.8.2 (14 Aug) restores “via device” on composed Matter devices behind bridges. Regression from 2026.8.0.
Why it matters
Bridged multi-endpoint Matter devices had fallen off the bridge’s device page. Single-endpoint bridged devices were fine.

06 · Devices
